President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, following a recommendation from his cabinet, has announced plans to enforce the installation of tracking devices on all sea vessels as part of a strategy to tackle drug trafficking and sales across the nation.
The decision was reached during yesterday’s cabinet meeting, during which a proposal from the Ministry of Homeland Security and Technology was discussed at length.
The implementation of tracking devices on sea vessels aims to enhance the effectiveness of law enforcement agencies in combating drug-related activities, which continue to pose a significant challenge nationwide.
In response to the cabinet’s recommendation, Muizzu has decided to amend regulations governing the safety of vessels operating within the maritime zone of the Maldives, making it compulsory for all vessels to be equipped with tracking devices.
Under the new regulations, arrangements will be established at the Maldives Police Service’s Maritime Operations Centre and the Maldives National Defence Force’s Maritime Rescue Coordination to monitor vessels equipped with these devices.
