The Maldives Corrections Service has confirmed an ongoing investigation into the reported involvement of former President Abdulla Yameen in a recent campaign event held in Hulhumale’, despite restrictions on engaging in political activities.

Yameen, who is presently under house arrest with provisional leniencies, is serving an 11-year prison sentence for charges related to money laundering and bribery.

A video circulating on social media depicts Yameen participating in a campaign event organised by a candidate for a Hulhumale’ constituency endorsed by his People’s National Front (PNF) party. Additionally, Yameen has been observed attending and addressing gatherings organised by the PNF party.

These actions contravene the conditions of leniency extended to the former President. Despite media inquiries, the Maldives Correctional Services has stated that investigations into the matter are ongoing, with no indication of any prior action taken regarding Yameen’s involvement in political activities.
