The Male’ City Council has taken decisive action against the ongoing issue of littering, issuing fines to 100 individuals found dumping garbage on the streets.
Despite previous penalties, littering remains a persistent problem as the holy month of Ramadan approaches.
The escalation in household cleaning activities has resulted in an increase in discarded garbage and furniture on the streets, leading to a buildup of litter in various areas of Male’ City. In response, Male’ City Council, in collaboration with WAMCO, has initiated a special road cleaning campaign.
Littering in public areas, including streets, parks, ports, and commercial zones in Male’ City and Villimale’, is strictly prohibited. The Male’ City Council reports violations to the Maldives Police Service, with fines imposed accordingly.
Male’ City Council disclosed that 100 individuals have been fined MVR 500 each for littering. Mayor Adam Azim, via official channels, revealed that within the past 16 days, the council has collected 222.5 tons of garbage.
Despite concerted efforts to maintain cleanliness, the problem of garbage dumping persists, causing inconvenience to both drivers and pedestrians due to limited parking space. Male’ City Council emphasises the importance of collective responsibility in maintaining the cleanliness of public spaces.
