Maldives Set for Mid-Year Launch of PEACE Cable Project

The near completion of the international PEACE cable project is expected to impact Maldives’ internet services, with ongoing cable configuration reported by the Communications Authority of Maldives, and project completion anticipated by mid-year.

The PEACE cable, connecting the Maldives to Singapore, Europe, and Africa, is the first international submarine cable to land directly on an island outside of the capital region of Hulhumale’.

CAM CEO Ilyas Ahmed highlighted the project’s potential benefits, stating, “This is a cable that connects directly to the main networks of the world’s telecommunication services…positive changes coming to the quality and latency of internet and telecommunications services, as well as to prices will be very much enabled as a result of this cable.”

The project, a collaborative effort between Ooredoo Maldives, Huawei Marine, Tropic Science Company Ltd, China-ASEAN Information Harbor Ltd, China Construction Bank and Huawei Marine Networks, will provide a more direct and efficient connection for the Maldives. 

Ooredoo has emphasised the project’s value in improving internet services and enabling the adoption of 5G technology, which promises to enhance connectivity and drive innovation.

The PEACE cable is expected to be operational and serving the public by mid-2024.
