The Ministry of Higher Education, Labour, and Skills Development has commenced plans for the creation of a Polytechnic Centre in Thulusdhoo, Kaafu Atoll, with a focus on water sports specialisation.

In a ceremony held in Thulusdhoo, the foundation stone for the centre was laid, with Minister Mariyam Mariya and Rector Ahmed Anwar of Villa College leading the proceedings.

This initiative aligns with the ministry’s overarching goal of broadening access to higher education and training programmes across diverse sectors and regions within the nation. The Polytechnic Centre aims to provide a range of courses catering to varying technical levels, with a primary focus on water sports and tourism, complemented by vocational programmes spanning multiple industries.

The project is being executed through a public-private partnership framework, with Villa Educational Services Private Limited spearheading the funding under a Build-Finance-Operate model. The Thulusdhoo Council has generously allocated land for both the construction of the centre and for conducting water sports training activities.

Upon completion of all phases, the institute is slated to offer an array of amenities for both students and faculty members. These include accommodation facilities, specialised tourism infrastructure, an ICT laboratory, auditorium, library, classrooms, administrative offices, staff lounges, student support services, meeting facilities, and study spaces. Furthermore, the institute underscores its commitment to student welfare by incorporating activity centres, prayer rooms, restroom facilities, lifts, and first aid services.

The ministry underscores the significance of establishing educational hubs such as this, which enable local youth to pursue their studies within their own communities, negating the need for extensive travel. This, in turn, is anticipated to unlock the full potential of their skills and talents, thereby fostering enhanced employment prospects.
