Gov’t Commences Construction of Cat Shelter in Hulhumale’

The Male’ City Council has initiated establishing a cat shelter facility in Hulhumale’, with the goal of providing care for the feline population that roams the streets of Male’ city.

In a notable ceremony held this morning at the proposed shelter site, Mayor Adam Azim and State Minister of the Ministry of Animal Welfare, Mariyam Vishama Ahmed, convened to inaugurate the commencement of practical operations.

Mayor Azim confirmed that fencing works commenced today and are anticipated to conclude within a 20-day timeframe, with construction slated to begin in the upcoming week. He underscored the pivotal role of the Ministry of Animal Welfare, emphasising their provision of comprehensive technical support for the project’s execution.

“I am optimistic that within the coming month or two, the shelter facility will be fully operational, facilitating the neutering of stray cats,” Mayor Azim articulated.

The cat shelter, set to be located in the Farukolhufushi area of Hulhumale’, has been allotted a generous 5,000 acres of land by the Housing Development Corporation (HDC) as part of the project’s second phase.
