Police Spokesperson Chief Superintendent Ahmed Shifan has announced that police personnel nationwide will experience a substantial salary increase, with adjustments of up to 35 percent scheduled to come into force this month.
Highlighting the rationale behind the revisions, Shifan emphasised that the aim is to ensure that all police personnel receive appropriate compensation commensurate with their duties, alongside their basic pay.
In a departure from previous practices where allowances were dispersed under various labels, Shifan outlined that going forward, four primary allowances will be issued. These encompass salary, rank allowance, job allowance, and risk allowance.
“The focus has been on enhancing the services provided by the police to the public, prompting a revision of the pay structure to reflect a substantial change in the remuneration of those diligently serving the community,” Shifan commented.
Shifan noted that the modest allowances granted to officers in preceding years failed to align with the evolving pay structure. Consequently, the erstwhile practice of disbursing minor allowances under disparate categories has been discontinued, with more substantial allowances now established. Shifan underscored that the rank allowance for officers nearly equals their basic salary.
Given that police officers are periodically reassigned to different divisions, their salaries will adapt in accordance with their evolving responsibilities.
Under the revised pay framework, Constable rank officers, presently earning a salary of MVR 11,820, will now receive a minimum of MVR 15,500 per month.
Shifan disclosed that inclusive of allowances, officers can anticipate a monthly salary of MVR 17,000. Moreover, patrol officers will receive an additional MVR 1,000, while those engaged in shift duties will benefit from an extra MVR 750.
Provisions will also be made for food allowances to officers lacking food arrangements or those unable to maintain regular meal times due to the demands of their duties.
The commitment to augment the salaries of police and MNDF personnel was a cornerstone of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s electoral platform. Correspondingly, salary hikes for MNDF personnel are slated to take effect from the ensuing month.
While precise details are yet to be officially released, indications suggest that enlisted personnel can expect salaries ranging between MVR 15,000 and MVR 45,000, Warrant Officers between MVR 29,000 and MVR 46,000, and Officers between MVR 31,000 and MVR 75,000.
