State Electric Company (STELCO) has issued a warning to the public concerning a recent upsurge in electricity usage, particularly notable during the current Ramadan period coinciding with peak temperatures, as reported by the Meteorological Center.
STELCO’s Managing Director, Hussain Fahmy, speaking to X, underscored the correlation between Ramadan and heightened electricity consumption, citing statistical evidence supporting this trend.
“Statistics indicate an average electricity output of 94 megawatts in the Greater Male’ region. However, the current usage stands at 104.7 megawatts,” Fahmy stated.
In light of this, Fahmy urged households to exercise restraint and economize on electricity usage.
The surge in utility consumption, encompassing both water and electricity, during Ramadan is an annual occurrence, prompting utility providers to regularly issue advisories on prudent usage.
As a proactive measure, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu previously announced the implementation of caps on utility bills, ensuring they do not exceed predefined limits. This initiative followed discussions between the government and utility service providers, including STELCO, Fenaka Corporation, and MWSC, with all companies now in compliance.
According to forecasts from the MET Office, the Maldives is expected to undergo its hottest period during March and April 2024. Predictions include above-average temperature rises, fluctuating humidity levels, and reduced cloud cover during this period.
