State Electric Company Limited (STELCO) has confirmed the tragic death of an individual who was electrocuted while attempting to steal from one of their transformers situated in Hulhumale’ Phase 2.
According to STELCO, the incident resulted in the fatality of the individual, who was pronounced dead upon arrival at Hulhumale’ Hospital after being transferred there for medical attention.
Hussain Fahmy, Managing Director of STELCO, took to social media earlier this morning to express condolences and address the unfortunate event.
As of now, no further details regarding the incident have been disclosed.
The incident follows recent concerns raised by Fahmy regarding theft from STELCO substations. Last Friday, Fahmy had alerted authorities to the escalating issue, citing vandalism and theft as causes for power interruptions in Hulhumale’.
Fahmy highlighted an incident where power supply was disrupted at Hassan Adam Mosque in Hulhumale’ Phase 2 during Tarawih prayers on Friday, attributing the disruption to theft from a nearby transformer.
STELCO continues to work closely with authorities to investigate the matter further.
