State Electric Company Limited (STELCO) has issued a cautionary advisory to the public, advising against the installation of steel-based advertisement boards embedded into the ground, citing potential risks of interference with the primary electricity network linking Male’ and Hulhumale’.
STELCO has established a network of cables connecting Male’ and Hulhumale’ from their headquarters to ‘Usfasgandu’, spanning across the bridge and highway. However, concerns have arisen as steel bars have been driven into the ground to facilitate the erection of billboards ahead of the upcoming parliamentary elections.
In a statement released, STELCO highlighted that a significant proportion of the city’s electricity is currently routed through this cable infrastructure.
According to STELCO, any damage sustained by the main network cable could result in disruptions to electricity supply in the vicinity, necessitating a considerable amount of time for rectification.
STELCO further emphasised that the cable network is live, and the insertion of foreign objects such as steel poses a potential hazard to human safety, with the risk of puncturing the cable.
“We urge regulatory bodies and individuals responsible for issuing permits for advertisement board installations to exercise heightened responsibility. Attention to these matters and the implementation of necessary precautions are crucial to safeguarding network integrity and ensuring uninterrupted electricity provision,” stated STELCO.
STELCO also affirmed their intent to pursue legal recourse and seek financial restitution from parties found responsible for any damage inflicted upon the cable network or resulting disruptions to electricity services.
