President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu pledged to address concerns regarding the treatment of drug rehabilitation patients, assuring that they will not face retrospective incarceration.

During the Q&A Program, ‘Raeesge Javab’, a member of the public expressed worries about the lack of opportunities for victims to complete drug rehabilitation treatment.

The concerned individual highlighted instances where patients participating voluntarily in methadone treatment were subsequently mandated by the court for retrospective rehab due to prior cases. This often led to individuals having to leave their employment to comply with court-ordered rehabilitation.

Acknowledging the issue, Muizzu agreed that the procedure under methadone treatment needed amendment to ensure that voluntary patients were not subjected to retrospective rehabilitation treatment under incarceration.

He vowed to bring the matter to the attention of the Ministry of Homeland Security and Technology and other relevant agencies to expedite solutions.

“The highlighted procedure will be amended to enhance the mechanism. I will liaise with the relevant bodies to ensure that patients receive continued treatment within legal parameters,” President Muizzu affirmed.

In efforts to address the escalating issue of drug abuse, the current government had previously announced plans to establish rehabilitation centers across the Maldives.
