President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has announced measures to acknowledge and support employees who continue to deliver essential services during the final 10 days of Ramadan, which have been designated as public holidays for government workers.

In a circular issued by Finance Minister Mohamed Shafeeq, it was outlined that employees reporting to work in public institutions during this period to provide essential services to the public will receive an additional allowance. This allowance will be disbursed alongside the upcoming month’s salary. Government institutions have been instructed to furnish details of these allowances via email by April 18.

The allowances will vary based on the employment status and pay framework of the individuals:

  • Employees remaining on their current pay framework will continue to receive overtime and holiday allowances as per existing regulations. Additionally, those working as usual during this period will receive allowances equivalent to two-thirds of their daily wage.
  • Employees transitioning to the State pay framework will observe the last 10 days of Ramadan as official holidays, receiving an allowance equivalent to half of their daily wage as defined in the Employment Act, excluding those exempted from Section 34A of the Act.
  • Employees whose pay frameworks have changed must adhere to the Overtime Payment Standard described in the State Pay Framework Standards for compensatory payments for overtime worked during these days.
  • Professionals under the State pay framework who are mandated to work during this period will be eligible for attendance allowances as per the Pay and Allowances Criteria for the post.
  • Employees under the State pay framework will be eligible for attendance allowances if they work during weekdays, excluding Fridays and Saturdays.

Muizzu had previously pledged to close government institutions during the last 10 days of Ramadan to facilitate worship. Accordingly, government institutions will be closed from the 21st day of Ramadan to the 30th day. Normal operations will resume on May 14th after the Eid holidays.

Despite the closure of government institutions, certain employees will continue to work to ensure the provision of essential services during this period.
