Immigration Controller Mohamed Shamman disclosed that more than 900 undocumented immigrants have been deported as part of a concerted effort to reduce the presence of foreigners residing unlawfully in the Maldives.

Addressing a joint press conference convened by the Local Governance Ministry, Home Ministry, Maldives Immigration, and Department of National Registration, Shamman outlined that regular operations are underway, with two to three major initiatives conducted each week to identify individuals lacking proper documentation.

“We are prioritising the removal of undocumented immigrants based on the available capacity at the detention centre. Deportation proceedings for such individuals are being expedited,” Shamman stated.

Highlighting concerns over illicit activities, Shamman drew attention to the significant number of foreigners engaged in the black market trade of US dollars within the Maldives. He elaborated on the modus operandi, citing transactions occurring near Automated Teller Machines (ATMs) and facilitated through Viber groups.

An operation led by Immigration’s Risk Intelligence and Legal Affairs, in collaboration with the Enforcement and Compliance Division, resulted in the apprehension of seven foreign nationals unlawfully involved in the sale of US dollars on March 15th.

Shamman confirmed that several of these detainees have already been deported. Emphasising the necessity of proper documentation, he revealed that efforts are underway to obtain required paperwork from respective embassies.

The deportation of undocumented immigrants and efforts to combat illicit activities underscore the government’s commitment to upholding immigration laws and safeguarding national security interests.
