MPL Signs with Three Firms to Initiate Sea-to-Air Cargo Transshipment Operations

Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) has reached agreements with three companies to launch Sea-to-Air Cargo Transshipment services, marking a notable development for the company. 

The agreements were formalised with Maldives Airport Company Limited (MACL), Maldives State Shipment (MSS), and Turkish Airlines during a special signing ceremony held in Meerumaa.

Turkish Airlines has partnered with MPL to serve as a cargo facilitator for the Sea-to-Air Cargo Transshipment. Ali Thoriq, Managing Director of Expedite Maldives, representing Turkish Airlines, signed the agreement. Expedite Maldives acts as the appointed agent of Turkish Airlines in Maldives. 

Furthermore, MPL concluded contracts with MSS, designating their role as a carrier partner, with Ahmed Shareef, Managing Director of MSS, signing on behalf of the company. Additionally, MPL finalized agreements with MACL, outlining collaborative efforts to offer Sea-to-Air Cargo Transshipment services. Mohamed Mihad, Chief Commercial Officer of MACL, signed the agreement.

At the signing ceremony, MPL CEO Mohamed Wajeeh underscored initiatives and projects entrusted to the company by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, aimed at bolstering the country’s economic growth. He expressed confidence that MPL’s introduction of transshipment services would positively impact the economy, leading to increased revenue. Endeavours to fulfil these objectives are currently underway.

Bilal Okuch, Regional Cargo Manager of Turkish Airlines, outlined plans to collaborate with MPL to position the Maldives as a notable destination for Sea-to-Air transshipment services. Okuch stressed the necessity of a hub capable of meeting airlines’ requirements, with the goal of transitioning operations from Sri Lanka to the Maldives.

MACL and MSS conveyed appreciation for partnering with MPL in a project targeting economic expansion and the enhancement of cargo services. Both entities anticipate significant industry changes as a result of this collaboration.

MPL officially announced the commencement of Sea-to-Air Cargo Transshipment services on March 15. This Hybrid Model, delivered in partnership with MACL and other international airlines, aims to efficiently address demands within the commercial sector. MPL underscored the primary benefit of increased flights to various countries resulting from this service, typically offered by foreign nations to expedite the export process.
