President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu revealed plans to reclaim 200 hectares from the Uthuru Thila Falhu (UTF) for the establishment of an Agriculture Economic Zone (AEZ), marking a significant step towards enhancing food security in the Maldives.

The initiative, set in motion through a Memorandum of Understanding signed between the Maldives Industrial Development Freezone (MIDFZ) and China Harbor Engineering Company (CHEC), underscores the government’s commitment to curbing the nation’s expenditure on imported produce by promoting domestic cultivation.

Speaking at a campaign event, Muizzu emphasised the administration’s determination to cultivate locally-grown produce to fulfil the needs of the Maldivian populace, thereby reducing dependency on imports and achieving full food security. The AEZ project, he revealed, will extend beyond land reclamation from UTF to encompass agricultural islands across the atolls.

Highlighting the broader economic implications, Muizzu articulated plans to not only meet domestic demand but also to cater to the requirements of the tourism sector, thus stimulating economic growth.

The AEZ initiative is poised to play a pivotal role in fortifying food security, revitalising the economy, and diminishing reliance on imported goods. Its comprehensive scope encompasses various facets, including land acquisition, infrastructure development, establishment of agricultural industrial parks, and the creation of logistical support facilities.

Furthermore, the project envisions the establishment of a vegetable and fruit manufacturing base, an agricultural resilience training facility, and a logistics hub to facilitate efficient distribution. Muizzu underscored self-reliance as a cornerstone of the nation’s future prosperity, positioning the AEZ as a significant stride in that direction.
