Waste Management Corporation (WAMCO) has announced a revision in the waste disposal rates for general vehicles, reducing the rate from MVR 0.75 per kilogram to MVR 0.50, effective immediately.

In a press release issued yesterday, WAMCO stated that this decision is in accordance with the directives of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu.

Under the new scheme, all vehicles accessing waste transfer stations in the Greater Male’ Region will be subject to an entry fee of MVR 150 per trip. Furthermore, the weight of waste carried by vehicles will now be assessed against their maximum carrying capacity.

General vehicles will incur a charge of MVR 0.50 per kilogram of waste disposed of, while vehicles belonging to government offices and state-owned enterprises (SOEs) will face a higher fee of MVR 2.66 per kilogram.

The implementation of these revised rates follows WAMCO’s previous charge of MVR 0.75 per kilogram of waste for general vehicles, which came into effect on March 01, 2023.

Muizzu has previously emphasised the challenges faced by citizens in waste disposal and has committed to addressing these issues. He pledged to reduce the disposal fee from MVR 750 per ton to MVR 500. The current administration had previously reduced the disposal fee from MVR 1,600 per ton on February 24.

Muizzu noted that WAMCO was facing significant challenges when the current government assumed office and measures have been undertaken to address these challenges.
