The Ministry of Tourism has disclosed that tourist arrivals in the Maldives have surged to over 794,000 as of May 4th, 2024, marking a notable increase of 12.3% compared to the same period last year, during which arrivals stood at just over 707,000.
The Maldives has witnessed a steady influx of tourists, nearing the 800,000 mark in annual terms for the year 2024.
Russia has notably ascended in ranking, displacing the UK to claim the position of the second-strongest market for the Maldives. The UK has now slipped to third place, with Italy and Germany closely trailing behind in fourth and fifth positions, respectively.
China continues to assert its dominance, contributing significantly with over 87,000 tourist arrivals recorded thus far in 2024.
Having attained its annual arrival target of 1.8 million tourists last year, the Maldives government has set an ambitious goal of welcoming 2 million annual arrivals for the current year.
With the current momentum, it appears likely that the Maldives will surpass the 800,000 annual arrival mark before the conclusion of May 2024.
In addition to the conventional arrivals via air, there has been a noticeable increase in arrivals via cruise liners this year, with several more liners scheduled to dock in the remaining months of 2024.
