Maldives Sports Sector Boosted by Deployment of International Coaches

The Minister of Sports, Fitness, and Recreation, Abdulla Rafiu, has announced the deployment of international coaches to the Maldives, marking a significant advancement for the nation’s sports industry. 

This initiative aligns with President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s commitment to enhancing the number of athletes and coaches, while expanding training opportunities within the country.

During a recent press conference, Minister Rafiu underscored the government’s strategic focus on training sports coaches locally, aiming to reduce the reliance on overseas training. This initiative is set to revitalise the sports industry and support relevant associations by cutting down the substantial expenses associated with international training.

Minister Rafiu also highlighted the launch of new training programmes in Faafu Atoll, supported by the University of Alaska Foundation (UAF) and Italy’s consulate in the Maldives. Commencing on 6 May, the programme is a collaborative effort involving Italy’s University of Milano-Bicocca, the renowned football club AC Milan, and the UAF Foundation for Children. 

Over the next two years, the programme will provide comprehensive football training while also promoting environmental conservation and sustainability.

Initially, the plan aimed to train two coaches from each island, but it has now been expanded to four coaches per island. Additionally, the programme intends to train 200 children over the two-year period, ensuring they gain environmental awareness alongside their sports skills. 

This approach underscores the Ministry’s dedication to nurturing both athletes and environmental stewards within the Maldives.
