The Executive Board of the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has concluded an official visit to the Maldives, held from 30 May to 2 June 2026, as part of its broader engagement with member states.
During the visit, the delegation reviewed UNICEF’s ongoing programmes in the Maldives and examined the country’s development context as a Small Island Developing State, including challenges linked to geographic dispersion and climate vulnerability.
The delegation met with senior government officials, including the Minister of Foreign Affairs, the Minister of Education, Higher Education and Skills Development, the Minister of Climate Change and Environment and Energy, and the Minister of Health, Family and Welfare.
Discussions also involved key national institutions such as the Maldives Police Service, the Prosecutor General’s Office, the Children’s Ombudsperson’s Office, and members of the judiciary, focusing on child protection, governance and service delivery.
As part of the visit, the delegation conducted field trips to Gaafaru in Kaafu Atoll and Vilimale’, where they engaged with island councils, school communities and local stakeholders. They also observed ongoing initiatives, including the Techpath digital learning programme, and met with young people, civil society representatives and members of the diplomatic community.
The delegation’s engagements highlighted UNICEF’s cooperation with national partners across education, child protection, health and climate resilience.
The UNICEF Executive Board serves as the governing body of the organisation, providing intergovernmental oversight and support. It comprises 36 member states representing the five regional groups of the United Nations.
