President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has sought cabinet approval for a treaty to enhance cooperation between the governments of Maldives and Sri Lanka in combating criminal activities.
The decision was announced following a cabinet meeting yesterday in response to a proposal submitted by the Minister of Foreign Affairs. The President’s Office confirmed that, based on the recommendation of his cabinet, the president has chosen to present the “Treaty Between the Government of the Republic of Maldives and the Government of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka on Mutual Legal Assistance in Criminal Matters” to the parliament for its consideration.
The proposed treaty aims to maintain the longstanding relationship between both nations while facilitating mutual support and cooperation in addressing criminal offences. Under its provisions, both countries would be required to assist with a broad spectrum of criminal cases under their respective legal frameworks and the stipulations outlined within the treaty.
Initial efforts to establish this mutual legal assistance treaty began in 2011, reflecting a strong commitment to strengthening collaborative mechanisms in addressing transnational criminal activities.
Meanwhile, Minister of Homeland Security and Technology Ali Ihusan has urged local law enforcement authorities to prioritize public safety and intensify efforts to combat gang-related criminal activities within Maldivian society.
