Gov’t Initiative Expands Employment Opportunities for Persons with Disabilities
The Ministry of Social and Family Development introduced new rules this year to enhance employment prospects for persons with disabilities.
The rules aim for equal opportunities and inclusivity across sectors and facilitate job placements, internships, and tailored workplace standards.
In a collaborative move earlier this year, the Ministry signed a memorandum of understanding with three resorts in the Maldives. This initiative seeks to equip persons with disabilities with essential vocational skills relevant to the tourism industry. The programme not only aims to bolster their employability but also strives to foster a more inclusive tourism sector.
Furthermore, the Maldives Airports Company Limited has joined forces with the Ministry to launch internship programmes specifically designed for persons with disabilities. This initiative aims to provide practical work experience and cultivate essential workplace skills, thereby enhancing their prospects for permanent employment.
Additional efforts include a partnership between the Ministry and the Care Society, aimed at delivering employment opportunities through targeted training programmes. Selected candidates will undergo a comprehensive two-month training course, designed to familiarise them with workplace environments and equip them with requisite job-related skills.
Looking ahead, the Ministry is actively engaged in discussions with the Road Development Corporation (RDC) and private enterprises to expand internship opportunities for persons with disabilities. These ongoing efforts underscore the government’s commitment to improving the quality of life for individuals with disabilities, empowering them to lead fulfilling lives with dignity.
