The Addu Fisheries Complex operated by the Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company (MIFCO) remains closed for the third consecutive day due to ongoing protests by fishers demanding resolution to delayed payments for their catch.

MIFCO reported that electricity to the facility was restored at 2pm on Monday following repeated disruptions by protesters who had cut off power to halt operations.

As of this morning, thirteen fishing vessels continue to occupy the harbour, insisting that operations cannot resume until their grievances are addressed, confirmed MIFCO.

According to the company, protesters have prevented site employees from entering the facility, compelling staff to utilise temporary on-site accommodations.

The demands put forth by the fishers include the issuance of a written commitment outlining a timeline and plan for settling outstanding payments. Additionally, the fishers have requested the presence of either the Minister of Fisheries and Ocean Resources or a representative from the President’s office to address their concerns.

In a communication to the media, MIFCO acknowledged the current calmness of the situation but expressed concerns that resuming operations could exacerbate tensions.
