The Ministry of Fisheries, Agriculture and Ocean Resources has signed an agreement with Malaysian firm Altus Oil & Gas to establish ice plants and storage facilities across 11 islands in the Maldives.
According to the ministry’s social media announcement, the initiative aims to strengthen the Maldivian fishing industry and ensure local fishermen gain convenient, reliable access to ice to preserve their catch. Under the contract, Altus Oil & Gas will construct ice plants capable of producing 30 tonnes of ice per day, alongside 50-tonne ice storage units, at each designated location.
The project targets key fishing hubs across several atolls, the ministry highlights. The government has selected the following 11 islands for installation:
- M. Mulah
- D. Hulhudheli
- Hdh. Kulhudhuffushi
- Ga. Nilandhoo
- Ga. Villingili
- Sh. Komandoo
- Ga. Maamendhoo
- Aa. Rasdhoo
- Ha. Dhidhdhoo
- K. Gaafaru
- Gdh. Rathafandhoo
This infrastructure development forms part of broader state efforts to address persistent logistical challenges facing local fishermen, allowing fleets to maintain fish quality during extended trips at sea.
