Male’ City Mayor Adam Azim has outlined plans to repurpose the neglected Male’ Industrial Village, aiming to alleviate parking shortages and congestion in the capital.

Speaking during an interview on SSTV’s Adhuge Safuha programme, Azim highlighted the extensive history of the site being used as a dumping ground, which has prompted numerous complaints to the city council.

Acknowledging the need for urgent action, Azim expressed gratitude for the substantial support received from the Housing Ministry, enabling the commencement of clearance operations in collaboration with various governmental bodies including the Waste Management Corporation (WAMCO), Housing Ministry, Local Government Ministry, Maldives Ports Limited (MPL), and the police.

With the clearance underway, Azim envisions utilising the site to ease congestion within Male’ City, with plans for a parking facility among the proposed developments. MPL’s involvement includes the construction of workshops within the area aimed at addressing traffic issues effectively and enhancing resident convenience.

Furthermore, Azim aims to improve maritime infrastructure by developing terminals for smoother vessel transitions, emphasising the need for redevelopment to facilitate ease of access for travellers.

In addition to infrastructure enhancements, Azim has proposed the development of public toilets within the area, marking a significant improvement to the site’s facilities. Despite the scale of the proposed changes, Azim remains optimistic about the project’s timeline, projecting completion within the next two years.

Azim acknowledged current operational challenges within the Industrial Village, attributing limited facilities to ongoing projects such as the Thilamale’ Bridge construction, which necessitates cooperation and space allocation. Efforts to clear the area, including assistance from stakeholders like MTCC, have been instrumental in facilitating progress.

Originally developed during former president Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom’s tenure, the Male’ Industrial Village has fallen into disrepair, becoming a hotspot for illegal activities amidst its neglect. Azim’s proactive measures aim to reclaim this space, transforming it into a vibrant hub serving Male’ City’s needs whilst addressing longstanding issues of congestion and urban decay.
