Bangladeshi New Year Celebrated in Maldives with Cultural Show and Unity

The Bangladesh High Commission in the Maldives celebrated Pohela Boishakh 1432, ushering in the Bangla New Year with vibrant cultural festivities and a spirit of unity among the Bangladeshi expatriate community, Maldivian friends and diplomatic community.
Held at the Maldives National University (MNU) premises in Malé, the event brought together dignitaries, diplomats, government officials and members of the Bangladeshi diaspora to mark this significant occasion in Bengali heritage. The celebration featured a colourful lineup of traditional music, poetry, and a Boishakhi fair showcasing Bangladeshi cuisine, handicrafts, and folk art.
The Acting High Commissioner of Bangladesh, Md Sohel Parvez, emphasised the significance of Pohela Boishakh as a symbol of Bangladesh’s rich cultural heritage and resilience. “Pohela Boishakh reminds us of our roots, our language, and the strength of our cultural traditions,” he said. “It is a moment of pride and joy not just for Bangladeshis, but also for all who cherish diversity, harmony, and peace.”
The celebration also served as a platform to promote cultural exchange and deepen the friendship between Bangladesh and the Maldives. Traditional songs such as “Esho He Boishakh” resonated through the venue as children and adults alike performed in colourful attire, adding a festive charm to the event.
Guests were treated to traditional delicacies such as Khichuri, fish, Bangladeshi street food and various traditional sweets and cakes, embodying the true spirit of Boishakhi hospitality.
The High Commissioner extended heartfelt thanks to all who attended and contributed to the event’s success, reinforcing the strong and growing bonds between the peoples of Bangladesh and the Maldives. Due to a weekly holiday, the Bangla New Year was celebrated on Friday.
