Minister of Construction and Infrastructure Dr Abdulla Muththalib has revaled that China has agreed to extend its involvement in the maintenance of the Sinamale’ Bridge for an additional three years.

Muthalib disclosed that the original contract, initially established between the previous administration and China, for the provision of maintenance services on the bridge, had lapsed in 2020.

Highlighting the lapse in maintenance efforts following the expiration of the contract, Muthalib remarked that the subsequent administration had only undertaken basic cleaning tasks, such as sweeping and general upkeep.

Emphasising the importance of diligent maintenance practices, Muthalib noted concerns regarding the deterioration of the bridge, citing instances of rusting on the arch and detachment of certain components.

Furthermore, he criticised the previous administration for purportedly neglecting essential maintenance tasks, particularly regarding the cleanliness of the bridge’s expansion joints, which necessitate regular attention.

Muthalib disclosed that China had presented a contract aimed at extending the maintenance agreement, although it had not been endorsed by the subsequent administration.
