Acting Male’ Mayor Ahmed Nareesh announced last night that the physical works on the development of four parking buildings in Male’ City are scheduled to commence next month.
This significant step comes after the approval of Male’ land use plan.
Addressing the crowd at a campaign rally for PNC’s Male’ mayoral candidate, Azima Shakoor, held at Maafannu Fini Park, Nareesh revealed that the first parking building will be strategically located near the Maafannu Fini Park area.
He emphasised that the effective resolution of such challenges relies on electing a mayor who can collaborate effectively with the government. Nareesh also shared that the city council had previously requested a 50-year extension for the land allocated to develop a parking building, but the request was denied. Despite securing a loan from Maldives Islamic Bank for a parking facility with a capacity of 1,800 vehicles, the council faced setbacks.
Nareesh assumed the responsibilities of Male’ Mayor following the resignation of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, who stepped down to assume another office.
The lack of adequate parking space has been a persistent issue in the densely populated Male’ City. The new administration’s commitment to addressing this concern is evident, with the facilitation of additional parking space being a key goal within the first 100 days.
To mitigate the current parking challenges, the police have temporarily ceased issuing parking stickers until additional parking spaces are established in Male’ City for vehicles.
