A cat shelter being built in Hulhumale Phase 2 will welcome the first batch of cats this month, Male’ City Mayor Adam Azim has said.

The city council intends to temporarily relocate some cats gathering in front of Salman Mosque and Marrybrown to the shelter compound while construction work continues, Mayor Azim said speaking to SSTV’s Adhuge Safhaa programme last night

The decision to relocate the cats arises from health concerns associated with cat excrement in these areas. Additionally, he addressed complaints of cats entering the mosque.

Mayor Azim provided updates on the shelter’s progress, confirming ongoing construction, equipment procurement, and staff recruitment.

The exterior fencing is nearing completion, with construction set to commence post receipt of necessary permits from the Housing Development Corporation (HDC), aiming for full operational status within six months.

Azim noted that city council will work with volunteer organisations to relocate these first batch of cats to the compound in May and June.

“Today we discussed this – they are gathering in an open area now, so while the construction of the shelter is going on, we can allocate an open area in the compound next to the facility for volunteers to relocate some of these cats in these locations to there until they can be neutered.”

Noting complaints from the public and public health concerns, Azim also highlighted the importance of treating cats with love and care.

“To create a kind and caring community, we must love everything in the environment around us – we must love each other, we must love the animals and plants as well. That’s the only way to build the kind of compassionate society that we all want”
