A civil suit has been filed against the Election Commission by West Henveyru MP Hassan Latheef, who is in charge of forming “The Democrats” party. The suit alleges that the Election Commission unjustly delayed the registration of the party, thereby impeding its formation and hindering the gathering of supporters for former President Mohammed Nasheed.

According to the claim, the Election Commission has violated various legal provisions, including the Constitution, the Political Parties Act, the Election Commission Act, and judicial rules. It further claims that the commission’s actions infringe upon constitutionally guaranteed fundamental rights.

“The Democrats” party has lodged the case in the civil court, and the Election Commission announced its decision to permit the party to hold a registration meeting on the second day of the following month. EC Vice-President Ismail Habeeb confirmed this development in a tweet, stating that the commission has informed the applicant of its decision to grant permission for the formation of a political party named “The Democrats” in the upcoming week.

On the 24th of last month, “The Democrats” were initially granted permission to form, and on the first day of this month, 3,560 applications were submitted to the Election Commission. The commission had previously indicated that the party would be registered after processing the submitted forms, a process expected to take approximately 3-4 weeks.

However, concerns have been raised by the Democrats, who suspect that the party’s approval has been deliberately delayed due to internal disagreements within the Election Commission. Some commission members have even chosen not to attend meetings, alleging that the commission chairman acted under undue influence when granting permission to the party.
