Committee Approves Three Rejected Ministerial Nominations

MV+ News Desk | June 6, 2024

The Parliamentary Government Oversight Committee has approved the nominations of three Ministers previously rejected by the 19th People’s Majlis, which was dominated by the opposition.

Initially, the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), the main opposition party, had instructed its members to reject four out of the 22 nominees put forward for President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s Cabinet. Consequently, on January 29, the parliament voted against the approval of three Ministers.

The individuals in question are Attorney General Ahmed Usham, Minister of Housing, Land, and Urban Development Dr Ali Haidar Ahmed, and Minister of Islamic Affairs Dr Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed.

Presided over by Supreme Court Judge HusnuSuood, the President reinstated these three nominees to their ministerial positions, prompting their names to be resubmitted to parliament for reconsideration.

Although the matter was initially brought before the 19th Majlis, it was subsequently referred to the committee for evaluation during the ongoing 20th People’s Majlis session.

In a meeting convened last evening, the Government Oversight Committee reviewed the case and voted to approve the Ministers.

Six out of nine members present concluded that the nominees met all necessary criteria for their roles and encountered no impediments to their appointments. However, one opposition member dissented, voting against their approval.
