Construction has commenced on a new mosque with a capacity of 500 worshippers, alongside a branch of the National Centre for the Holy Quran, in Maamendhoo.
A groundbreaking ceremony was held on the island to mark the start of the project, attended by senior officials, council members and residents. The ceremony was inaugurated by Muhuthaz Muhsin, with Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed also in attendance.
The mosque is being developed with modern facilities, including a solar power system and air conditioning, aimed at ensuring sustainability and comfort for worshippers. The development will also include a dedicated classroom and a library, forming the operational base for Quranic education programmes on the island.
The Ministry of Islamic Affairs, in collaboration with the National Centre for the Holy Quran, is working to establish Quran teaching branches across the Maldives, particularly in the atolls, as part of efforts to strengthen engagement with the Holy Quran.
Mohamed Muizzu has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to the initiative, outlining plans to establish a Quran centre branch on every inhabited island.
The project forms part of broader efforts to promote Islamic values and expand access to religious education across the country.
