Fathimath Dheema Ali, the first athlete from the Maldives to qualify for the Olympics, has previously represented the country by carrying the national flag at the closing ceremony of the 2019 Indian Ocean Island Games (IOIG) and the opening ceremony of last year’s IOIG.

Dheema was also given the honour of flying the Maldives flag at Expo 2020 in Dubai, where she showcased the nation’s advancements in architecture and technology. Although the expo is not a sporting event, Dheema’s progress in sports earned her this opportunity.

Ibadulla Adam, a young athlete currently training in Jamaica, will have the honour of flying the Maldives flag in international games for the first time.

The Maldives is sending its largest contingent in the history of its participation in the Olympics. For the first time, Maldivian athletes will compete in four sports: badminton, athletics, swimming, and table tennis.

Fathima Nabaha will represent the Maldives in badminton. Nabaha is notable for being the first Indian Ocean athlete to compete in two consecutive Olympics and the only one to have participated in more than one Olympics.

In athletics, Ibadulla’s participation follows his impressive performance in national time trials. His training in Jamaica has prepared him for his Olympic debut.

This historic participation reflects the growth and development of sports in the Maldives, showcasing the dedication and talent of its athletes on an international stage.
