The Diabetes Society of Maldives (DSM), in collaboration with the Health Protection Agency (HPA) and the Swimming Association of Maldives, is organising a nationwide swimming event on 14 November to raise awareness about diabetes.

The initiative, titled ‘Maldives Swims for Diabetes 2026’, will coincide with World Diabetes Day and is being held under the theme ‘Early Action on Diabetes’.

Swimming activities will take place across all islands on the same day, with communities able to organise their events at any time between 6am and 6pm.

In the Greater Malé area, the main event will be held at the Swimming Track in Malé from 2pm to 6pm. Individuals aged six and above who can swim are eligible to participate, with both individual and team registrations open.

Participants will swim distances of 25 to 50 metres, depending on their age categories. Adults and older participants will be scheduled earlier in the afternoon, followed by younger children. Organisers will inform registered participants of their respective timings in advance.

DSM said the initiative aims to encourage regular physical activity and highlight the importance of early detection and timely management of diabetes, particularly Type 2 diabetes.

Safety arrangements and emergency response support will be coordinated with the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF), Senahiya and the HPA’s Emergency Medical Services.

Pre-registration is open to the public, and registered participants will receive a serial number.

The event aims to bring communities across the country together through a shared activity while promoting healthier lifestyles and greater awareness of diabetes.
