The theme of this year’s World Telecommunication and Information Society Day, determined by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), is “Gender Equality in Digital Transformation”.

Minister Ihusan highlighted the vital role of evolving technologies in shaping the country’s economy, society, and daily lives. He said the president’s Digital First Nation policy forms the backbone of this transformation, aiming to provide efficient digital services to citizens across all islands, ensuring even the most remote communities can access opportunities previously out of reach.

Reflecting on the broader global context, the minister acknowledged a pressing concern: the risk of leaving behind marginalised groups, particularly women, in the digital revolution.

“Are we ensuring that everyone can participate in the digital transformation? Can we afford to leave anyone behind?” he asked, pointing to a digital divide that persists in many parts of the world.

However, he said that despite global disparities, the Maldives has shown encouraging progress. The participation rate of women in digital transformation sectors such as science, technology, and engineering is relatively strong and steadily growing. The nation also provides equitable access to education for women, laying the groundwork for a more inclusive digital future. Even so, he noted that challenges remain, especially regarding female representation in leadership and governance roles within the digital sector.
