PPM was registered as a political party on 27 October 2011, after the Dhivehi Rayyithunge Party (DRP) divided into two distinct factions. The DRP, registered in 2005, was dissolved on 15 March 2023.

PPM held the presidential office from 2013 to 2018 when former President Abdulla Yameen won the election. Voting was held on three occasions during that election.

The current ruling party, the People’s National Congress (PNC), was registered in 2019 due to the fear of losing PPM amidst an internal conflict between Yameen and former president and half-brother Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, the founder of PPM. Current Speaker of the Parliament Abdulraheem Abdulla was one of the PNC’s founding members and its Chairperson. Since then, the two parties have existed in a coalition.

Former President Yameen was legally unable to run in the 2023 presidential election because he was found guilty of money laundering. Current President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu won the internal election at PNC on the ticket to run in that year’s presidential election.

After Muizzu assumed office, disagreements between Muizzu and Yameen resulted in Yameen leaving the coalition and PPM to form his political party, People’s National Front (PNF). Registered on 25 April 2024, the party currently has 2,822 members.

Afterwards, Muizzu prioritised PNC, and the party held membership drives for PPM members to transfer their membership to PNC. According to the ECM registry, PNC currently has the highest number of registered members, with 68,968.
