Minister of Social and Family Development Dr Aishath Shiham announced that an Empowerment Hub for people with disabilities will be developed within six months, with contractors confirming that construction work will start next week.
Speaking at a press conference held at the President’s Office, Dr Aishath said the facility will feature accessible infrastructure and dedicated spaces for training, enabling people with disabilities to gain skills, improve employment opportunities, and participate fully in society.
“It’s a place where people with disabilities can come together with their families, learn skills for a job, find employment, and feel empowered,” she said.
The hub will also include meeting spaces for non-governmental organisations, allowing civil society groups to engage directly with the community.
Dr Aishath provided updates on other social initiatives, including the expansion of domestic violence shelters. She said a third shelter will be developed in Raa Atoll Ungoofaaru, adding to facilities planned for Addu City and Hulhumalé.
“So we are focusing on three areas in the Maldives to develop domestic violence shelters,” she said, noting that the Addu City shelter has already been contracted.
The minister also highlighted services for senior citizens, stating that the Israhvehinge Naadhee social centres have been well received. She said the ministry is in talks to establish similar centres on islands nationwide, with 77 island councils expressing interest in developing community centres to support older residents.
Dr Aishath emphasised the importance of such initiatives, noting that the Maldives’ elderly population is projected to double by 2030. She said the ministry aims to expand community-based services to strengthen social support systems and ensure inclusive access to care across the country.
