The EPA aims to set the record straight and emphasize that sea turtles continue to be classified as protected species under the Environmental Act (No. 4/93). As such, it is strictly illegal to engage in activities that involve catching, killing, or causing harm to any species of sea turtles.
The EPA’s statement serves as a reminder to all individuals, including fishermen, tourists, and local communities, to uphold these legal provisions and respect the sanctity of sea turtle habitats. It is crucial to understand that these protected species play a crucial role in maintaining the ecological balance of the Maldivian marine environment.
