Fayyaz Ismail, the Chairman of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), has called upon party members to unite and work towards securing a second term victory in the upcoming presidential election. His rallying call came during the celebration of the party’s 18th anniversary, where he addressed party members and emphasized the importance of solidarity and collective effort in achieving their goals.

The MDP was founded in exile in Colombo, Sri Lanka in November 2003, during a time when political parties were prohibited in the Maldives under the administration of Maumoon Abdul Gayoom. Despite the challenges, the MDP managed to organize across the country, gathering signatures from 42 founding members and establishing party structures.
In January 2005, individuals affiliated with the MDP openly contested the Parliamentary elections, marking a significant milestone. Subsequently, legislation allowing for the registration of political parties was passed in June 2005. After party members staged a sit-in at the Home Ministry on June 23, 2005, the MDP was officially registered as the Maldives’ first political party.
Later that year, the MDP held its first official congress, electing local party structures and formulating a policy framework. Despite facing obstruction from security forces and the government, the MDP persisted in its pursuit of democratic progress, aided by international mediation efforts such as the Westminster talks in 2006.
Currently, the MDP stands as the largest political party in the Maldives, boasting a membership of 48,990 individuals. As the party celebrates its 18th anniversary, Chairman Fayyaz’s call for unity serves as a reminder of the importance of collective action as they strive for a second term victory in the upcoming presidential election.
