The extension follows an inspection by FENAKA Corporation, which found that streetlights on 144 islands did not meet safety requirements. Initially, a six-month deadline was established on 7 August for the necessary repairs.

In a statement released today, FENAKA confirmed that the Utility Regulatory Authority (URA) has granted an extension until 25 February next year. This decision comes after the President’s Office advised recognising the difficulties faced by councils in meeting the original timeline.

The installation of Earth Leakage Circuit Breakers (ELCBs) in streetlights is crucial for public safety. The deadline has previously been extended twice to allow councils additional time for repairs and safety improvements.

The inspection was prompted by a tragic incident in which an 18-year-old was electrocuted after coming into contact with a water puddle electrified by a street lamp post, also resulting in injuries to an 8-year-old.
