Minister of Fisheries and Ocean Resources Ahmed Shiyam has announced plans to begin the conversion of Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company Limited (MIFCO) factories to utilise renewable energy sources later this year.
The minister highlighted this initiative as part of the ministry’s achievements over the past six months since the current administration assumed office.
The primary focus of this effort is to reduce operational costs at fish processing factories by optimising the use of renewable energy. Minister Shiyam emphasised that the goal is to convert 35% of the expenses incurred at these facilities to renewable energy, with special attention given to MIFCO factories where costs are highest. Additionally, plans are underway to transition the fish processing factories in Kooddoo in Gaafu Alif Atoll and Felivaru to renewable energy sources.
In line with the administration’s objectives to reduce the export of raw fish and increase value-added processing, the minister also stressed the need for design changes in fishing vessels.
Overall, this initiative underscores the current administration’s commitment to sustainable practices and cost-efficiency in the fisheries sector.
