Four Hospitalized as Fire Brought Under Control Following Gas Cylinder Blast at Hulhumalé Café
Four expatriate workers were hospitalized this morning after a gas cylinder exploded and sparked a fire at a café near the Ruggandu 1 area in Hulhumalé, with the blaze brought under control shortly after the blast.
The incident occurred at approximately 10:00 hrs, prompting an immediate deployment by the Maldives Police Service and the MNDF Fire and Rescue Service. By the time first responders arrived at the location, the fire had already been extinguished.
Authorities confirmed that the four individuals transported to Hulhumalé Hospital for treatment are expatriate staff employed at the establishment. While initial reports indicated up to five people had sustained varying degrees of injury, officials later confirmed that hospital care was required for the four workers.
No customers were injured in the incident. In addition, the café sustained no structural damage to the building or kitchen equipment, though dishware was shattered as patrons evacuated the premises following the loud blast.
Police said inquiries are ongoing to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the explosion.
