Four Indian Nationals Remanded in Maldives over Suspected Drug Smuggling

MV+ News Desk | April 23, 2025

Four Indian nationals have been remanded in custody for one month by the Criminal Court of the Maldives for allegedly attempting to smuggle narcotic substances into the country with the intention to distribute.

The men, aged 22, 26, 30, and 58, were detained following a joint operation in which authorities discovered drugs on board the vessel they had used to enter Maldivian waters. The court concluded there was sufficient evidence to support the allegations, including an official statement confirming the presence of illicit substances on the boat.

In its remand order issued on Monday, the Criminal Court stated there were reasonable grounds to believe the drugs were brought into the country for peddling purposes. The decision to detain the suspects was also based on concerns they posed a threat to public safety and could attempt to flee if released.

Drug trafficking and abuse remain persistent challenges in the Maldives, with foreign nationals frequently implicated in such cases. According to official figures, the Maldives Police Service has received 494 drug-related reports so far in 2025.

In a related development earlier this year, Indian authorities intercepted drugs valued at MVR 59 million that were reportedly destined for the Maldives, highlighting continued regional cooperation in counter-narcotics efforts.
