Gasim Pledges to Waive Rents for Social Housing in Hulhumale’ if Elected as President

Jumhooree Party leader Gasim Ibrahim has pledged to waive rents for social housing in Hulhumale’ if he is elected as the President of the Maldives.
Speaking at the 158th JP council meeting held at Paradise Resort, Gasim criticized the government’s current housing policy, raising concerns about fairness in land allocation.
During his speech, Gasim questioned the practice of selling land to some individuals while granting it free of charge to others. He expressed his commitment to waive the rent for the flats provided in Hulhumale’. Gasim emphasized the need to ease the financial burden on the residents. However, he did not provide further details regarding the implementation of this proposal.
The government has established social housing in Hulhumale’ as part of its efforts to address housing issues. One of the major complaints about these shelter flats, built during the presidency of Abdullah Yameen, has been the high monthly rent. Currently set at MVR 8,500 per apartment, including maintenance fees, the government plans to reduce it to MVR 6,300 per month for the next seven years, starting from this month.
Gasim’s criticism extended beyond housing policies, as he also expressed concerns about the government’s influence over independent institutions. In light of these concerns, he called on the people to carefully consider their choices in the upcoming presidential election on September 9.
