Minister of Islamic Affairs, Dr. Ahmed Zahir, has officially commenced the construction of a mosque in Himandhoo, Alifu Alifu Atoll. The inauguration of the project took place in the presence of Minister Zahir, President of Himandhoo Island Council, Husham Ismail, council members, senior officials from the Ministry of Islamic Affairs, and residents of the island.

According to the Ministry of Islamic Affairs, the forthcoming mosque will be able to accommodate up to 300 worshippers and will include a dedicated area for women. Elite International Private Limited has been awarded the contract for the construction, which is projected to conclude within a year, with an estimated cost of USD 668,800.

Husham, the President of Himandhoo Island Council, acknowledged that the current mosque, which has been serving the community for approximately three decades, also accommodates 300 worshippers. However, he emphasized the significance of building a new mosque due to the island’s expanding population.

The government’s initiative to construct mosques across the nation is part of a broader effort to enhance access to fundamental and essential services in all inhabited islands, including smaller communities. This endeavor aims to address the needs of local residents and promote religious and communal development.
