Gov’t Moves to Permit Spearfishing and Expand Diving Activities
Government plans to allow spearfishing in Maldivian waters
The government has announced plans to amend existing regulations to permit spearfishing in Maldivian waters, as part of efforts to diversify the tourism sector.
Minister of Tourism and Environment Thoriq Ibrahim provided the update during a press conference, stating that work is underway to introduce a regulatory framework that will allow the activity, which has been prohibited in the Maldives for the past 40 years.
The proposed changes are expected to come into effect within April, creating a new tourism segment aimed at attracting niche markets and enhancing the range of experiences available to visitors.
Although spearfishing is currently banned, the use of hand-held iron rods for fishing is not prohibited and remains a common practice in the country.
In addition to spearfishing, the government is also preparing to introduce regulations for technical recreational diving. The initiative is intended to expand diving limits beyond the current depth of 30 metres to 40 metres, enabling more advanced diving experiences.
Authorities expect the introduction of technical recreational diving to attract a greater number of specialised diving tourists, contributing further to the diversification and growth of the tourism industry.
