The Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company (MIFCO) is packaging 118,000 cases of tuna cans to be distributed by the government as gifts for the upcoming Ramadan, the company stated.

MIFCO expects to complete the packaging of all cases by Thursday next week. The packaging efforts began in November last year, with production scheduled to ensure other orders were not affected. MIFCO described the achievement as significant for the company.

Due to storage limitations, MIFCO collaborated with the State Trading Organisation (STO) and the Ministry of Local Governance to store over 30,000 cases at warehouses in HDh. Kulhudhuffushi Port and Addu Hithadhoo Port. The remaining cases will be transported from Felivaru to the Malé area for distribution, as directed by the ministry.

The Ministry of Local Governance will coordinate with island councils to ensure the tuna can cases reach households across the country. Under the directive of President Dr Mohamed Muizzu, similar distributions took place last Ramadan, when 111,231 cases were delivered, including 50,519 to households in Malé and 60,712 across the atolls.

In addition to the tuna distribution, the president has approved a special electricity bill discount for households during Ramadan. Domestic electricity bills will be capped at a maximum of MVR 400.
