Government to Dissolve Malé City Group of Hospitals, Establish Nationwide Tertiary Network
President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has announced plans to dissolve the Malé City Group of Hospitals (MCGH) and replace it with a unified “Maldives Tertiary Hospitals Group” aimed at streamlining administration and curbing state healthcare expenditures.
Speaking on the sixth episode of Public Service Media’s (PSM) “Nation Chat” podcast series, President Muizzu stated that the structural overhaul will connect all state tertiary hospitals and developing tertiary-tier regional facilities into a single operational network to eliminate systemic redundancies and improve patient care nationwide.
The move marks the phasing out of the MCGH framework, which President Muizzu established on January 18, 2024, to bring Greater Malé Region facilities, primarily Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH), Hulhumalé Hospital, and Villimalé Hospital under a unified governing board.
According to the President, the expanded national body will allow hospitals to share institutional resources and easily mobilize medical specialists across different facilities, reducing the need for citizens to travel to the capital or abroad for advanced medical consultations.
“The primary objective is to facilitate resource-sharing between hospitals, streamline the mobilization of medical specialists across facilities, and elevate the overall standard of care provided to citizens,” President Muizzu said.
The transition to the new network is scheduled to commence in November and will take between three and four months to complete. The President confirmed that the restructuring will be achieved without expanding public sector headcount.
Under the new operational model, the administration also plans to optimize deployment pipelines for state-sponsored medical graduates upon completion of their studies, while establishing frameworks to base high-tier foreign specialists domestically to provide advanced tertiary care.
