Gov’t Awards Contract to Chinese Company for Maldives Surfing Arena

Ministry of Sports, Fitness and Recreation has assigned the task of constructing a state-of-the-art surfing and bodyboarding facility in Maldives to the Chinese company Rotime Engineering Technology Private Limited. 

The agreement for this ambitious project was formalised during a ceremony held at the Housing Development Corporation (HDC), where Minister Abdulla Rafiu and Managing Director Zhou Weidong sealed the venture agreement.

Minister Rafiu highlighted that the inception of this project was prompted by a request from the Maldives Surfing and Bodyboarding Association. The primary aim is to address the challenges faced in hosting international competitions on a larger scale.

Managing Director Zhou Weidong stressed the significance of sports such as surfing and bodyboarding in rejuvenating Maldivian culture and traditions. He reiterated his dedication to fostering the growth of these sports in the future. Rotime Engineering and Technology has previously undertaken projects such as the development of a swimming pool in Hulhumale’ and is currently engaged in constructing a tennis complex.

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu disclosed during the Ahaa Forum that discussions have been held with two surfing associations, and efforts are underway to expedite the construction of the new stadium. This aligns with the administration’s pledge to advance sports in the Maldives.

Minister Rafiu emphasised the importance of utilising sports resources efficiently and structuring them in a manner that optimally benefits athletes. This underscores the ongoing endeavours to enhance the sporting landscape in the country.
