The Ministry of Health has awarded contracts for the construction of new hospital buildings in three key islands, to address the pressing need for improved medical infrastructure in the Maldives.

These developments will see the establishment of modern healthcare facilities in Raa atoll’s Alifushi, Noonu atoll’s Manadhoo, and Meemu atoll’s Muli. The decision comes as a response to the space constraints currently affecting medical services in these areas.

According to the Ministry of Health, the construction of these new hospital buildings is expected to alleviate the strain on existing facilities and enable the expansion of healthcare services to better cater to the needs of the local population. Additionally, residents from neighbouring islands will also benefit from enhanced access to medical care.

The hospitals in Manadhoo and Muli are set to have a capacity of 50 beds each, with construction contracts valued at MVR 185 million and a completion timeframe of two years. Meanwhile, the hospital in Alifushi is planned to accommodate 30 beds, with a projected cost of MVR 128 million and an anticipated completion period of 730 days.

In light of recent global health challenges, the Ministry has underscored the importance of preparedness by ensuring that the new hospitals will be equipped with flu clinics and isolation facilities. This strategic approach aims to guarantee the continuity of essential medical services, even in the event of future health crises akin to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Moreover, the hospitals will incorporate solar PV systems to mitigate energy costs, demonstrating a commitment to sustainable healthcare practices. Each bed within the hospitals will also be outfitted with piped oxygen, medical air, and suction facilities, enhancing the quality of care provided to patients.

These developments mark a significant step towards enhancing healthcare infrastructure across the Maldives, underscoring the government’s commitment to improving public health services in remote island communities.
