Maldives Transport and Contracting Company has been awarded contracts to carry out harbour development and shore protection works in Utheemu and Maduvvari, as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen maritime infrastructure across the country.
The agreements were signed by Hassan Rasheed from the Ministry of Construction, Housing and Infrastructure and MTCC’s Deputy Managing Director, Ahmed Shareef Abdul Rahman Yoosuf.
Under the Maduvvari project, the scope of works includes 11,050 cubic metres of sand backfilling, along with harbour maintenance and dredging operations. The project also involves the installation of 308 metres of groynes, 77 mooring rings and 11 harbour lights, as well as concrete paving and a pump drainage system. Shore protection measures will include the construction of 184 metres of breakwater and 25 metres of revetment structures. The project is scheduled for completion within 360 days.
For the Utheemu project, both existing and new harbour basins will be dredged to improve depth and navigability. The works will also include land reclamation, installation of groynes, mooring rings, harbour lighting and concrete paving. Additional shore protection measures comprise geotube revetments, groyne maintenance, and the construction of a ramp, breakwater and channel breakwater. This project is scheduled to be completed within 510 days.
The developments form part of broader national efforts to enhance harbour infrastructure, improve connectivity, and strengthen coastal protection in island communities.
